International Women's History Month
26th March 2025

Miss Joanne Kilburn

Head of History & Politics

Throughout March, the History & Politics Department have run a series of events to mark Women’s History Month and International Women’s Day.  Alongside members of the department, the History Academic Reps have brought their enthusiasm to help raise awareness of significant women both past and present, the role women play in society and the feats that are being achieved.

SIX The Musical break time karaoke proved a hit with the Sixth Formers and the tree set up in the Quiet Room for dedications to ‘Amazing Women’ has been visited and added to by many staff and students.

A big thank you to colleagues in other departments around College from the Library and English, to Biology who have also taken up the mantle of celebrating Women’s History Month within their fields.

At CLC, we have been actively celebrating Women's History Month, engaging a wide range of students in meaningful activities. One highlight has been the Lower College Women's History Month Treasure hunt, which has provided a fantastic opportunity for personal reflection on inspirational women and the sharing of their remarkable stories with others.

It has been incredibly rewarding to collaborate with fellow history representatives and the wider College community, especially as the contributions of key female figures are often overshadowed by those of their male counterparts.

This initiative has not only been enjoyable but has also encouraged us to consider how we can continue to amplify the diverse perspectives and ensure that everyone's stories are heard in the future.

To create engagement and awareness for Women’s History Month, I put together a calendar that spotlighted a different historically significant woman each day. The goal of this was to highlight the often overlooked contributions of women throughout history and inspire students, especially those in the younger years, by introducing them to a diverse range of role models.

Throughout this process, I aimed to select women from various fields, including science, politics, literature, and activism, as well as different nationalities and backgrounds, ensuring a broad representation of achievements and experiences. I also wanted to make the calendar interactive and educational, so I included links to articles where students could learn more. Some of the figures featured were well-known pioneers, while others were lesser-known but equally influential in their respective fields.

This project was a valuable learning experience for me as well. Researching these profiles deepened my appreciation for the resilience and impact of these women, and I hope that all the students who clicked on the article links, discussed them in tutor time, or simply glanced at the calendar, found it thought-provoking and inspiring.

Women’s History Month has been an exciting time as an Academic History Representative. After having a meeting with the other academic representatives and the heads of reps, I was assigned the task of organising SIX The Musical karaoke. This was super exciting to be assigned as this was one of the ideas that I had proposed.

First, I had to decide how I wanted to advertise this event as the dates and times had already been confirmed. My first thought was to send out a head prefect email but I got to thinking what would attract people to the karaoke and so I decided to make a poster on canva. I used a vivid purple colour, a colour I associate with SIX, with show lights overlooking the SIX logo. I put the dates and rooms they would have to go to as well as a picture of the Queens themselves.

I had planned to send out a head prefect email but as I walked around College, I noticed millions of posters on the walls. What an incredible way to advertise. I printed out posters and decided to put them up around the places the karaoke would be taking place.
