SFC1, on behalf of CLC Sustainability Committee
We are growing up in a generation where sustainability is more crucial than ever. Climate change and global warming are not just topics in a geography classroom but rather also raise the question of whether we can satisfy the need of our generation without compromising resources of future generations. Global sea levels have risen by 90 millimeters since 1993 and 1.5 billion trees are cut down every year: the impacts of said climate change is not distant anymore, its effects are looming and are increasingly imminent on us as a population.
In my opinion, sustainability should be especially important for young people as it is ultimately our generation that is affected by climate change; inherently that comes with a sense of responsibility. Our generation and our children's generation will be directly affected by global warming. At CLC we are constantly taught that age is just a number: in fact, as youngsters, we are more creative, more imaginative, more confident: we can make an impact. To me, sustainability is not merely a topic of conversation, but a way to give back to the world an ensure generations after us are able to live to their fullest.
Within Sustainability Committee, we are currently approaching sustainability with a multi-pronged approach. For three years, I have been leading the hydroponics project where we combine engineering with sustainability, aiming to create a fully functioning hydroponics system to grow food crops for meals at Houses and therefore reduce carbon footprint in food transport. We have iterated through three models now.
Another major project we are leading is in collaboration with the Acturo data company - an initiative to promote small-scaled sustainable lifestyle changes for every student by increasing awareness of daily energy usages. As a result we have pushed a TV monitor in the Garden Common Room with energy usage rankings by House, thus encouraging every House to minimise excessive energy waste.
Other initiatives we promote include gardening, leading weekly sustainability wellbeing sessions to promote creativity around the topic, and Sustainability Week - where we set up a week full of sustainability-related activities (e.g., sustainability quiz, sustainability movie night) to bring some fun into environmental awareness.
We have also aimed to promote awareness in Houses, for instance, by installing posters by the food trolleys reminding pupils to not take more food than they need and to throw their food into the compost bin rather than general waste. Large-scale impact often compounds from individual changes; this is the idea we are trying to raise.
Other organisations within CLC are also taking a lead on environmental awareness. Environmental Society is a club that runs weekly focusing on the educational aspect of sustainability; a range of students take the opportunity to present on an environmental topic of their choice every week. By taking an active approach towards sustainability in CLC, we hope to nurture and encourage all sorts of approaches from pupils towards tackling climate change.
