Aardman Animations Workshop for LC1
7th July 2023

To celebrate the end of a fantastic year of Art in LC1 (Year 7), we had a two day workshop with Oscar winning animation company Aardman. We had a really a successful two days, with lots of fun and creative thinking. Read on to see what the students enjoyed:

The LC1s were split into two groups to take part in an Aardman Animation workshop. At first, I was a little reluctant as to how the day would turn out but even though I am not the best sculptor that you will meet, I actually ended up having so much fun!

The workshop allowed us to let our imaginations to run riot! For example, me and a friend were struggling to make morph, the cartoon character, so the instructor suggested that we instead made an animal morph which we both found a lot easier. The video results at the end of the day really showed this with all the different outfits and props that people made for their characters.

I found it really inspirational to find out that Aardman has become female dominated in the recent years, and it really shows that in life, if you really want to achieve something, that it is always possible. It really surprised me how much time and money goes into making a single character, and how many people contribute to making a short clip of say Wallace and Gromit, or Shaun the Sheep!

Overall, I think that it was a great afternoon filled with creativity. Thank you to Mrs Freedman for arranging this amazing workshop for us! - Tanvee

The Aardman workshop was not only fun, it made me more interested in art. Firstly, we made Morphs from oil based modeling clay and accessories which makes them have personalities! Then we learnt how to use the app 'Aardman Animations' to create skits with our unique Morphs.

We had to use the landscape mode and take pictures of the Morphs doing different poses. We took multiple photos of the Morphs doing actions slowly so the scene would be more smooth. We also learnt what the different buttons helped us in our videos. It took quite a few tries but the results were definitely worth it!

The visitor from Aardman gave us a wonderful introduction to creating animation and some fun facts about the company. He introduced us to different departments of film-making and some of the processes involved in making a video. - Penny

The Aardman workshop was very fun! We were introduced to a lump of clay and two pieces of paper with instructions on how to make our own Morph character, once we had finished that we looked at a PowerPoint and saw the history of the Aardman company.

It was very interesting to see all the different characters and watch different episodes from previous shows. When we came back after lunch, we starting working in a group to make a short animation of our characters, when we had finished we showed all of the clips the different groups had made (they were all really good and funny to watch). It was an excellent workshop and we were all happy that we got to bring back our characters! - Caris
