On Friday 18th March, College welcomed Consultant Othopaedic Spinal Surgeon, Caspar Aylott for a talk organised by SFC1 (Year 12) students, Maria and Bonnie. They give their account as follows: “Surgery Club welcomed Caspar Aylott to speak about his career as an orthopaedic spinal surgeon on Friday 18th March in the hope of encouraging us to pursue a career in medicine. We had a great turnout of over 40 people including a wide range of year groups.
Mr Aylott started his talk by describing his interests outside of medicine, from tennis to windsurfing. He emphasised the importance of a work-life balance, especially in the high stakes of a medical career. Mr Aylott encouraged us to find passions outside of medicine for ourselves, but also as a way for us to connect to patients.
He highlighted the importance of the doctor-patient relationship and how simply reading about a football match can put a patient at ease during consultations. It was surprising to hear Mr Aylott speak only of the benefits of having completed an engineering degree before pursuing his career in medicine. He spoke of how his prior experience as a university student meant he was already adapted to living away from home. One of the most engaging aspects of his talk was the interactive diagnosing of patients using real-life scans. Using background information Mr Aylott gave us, we were able to step into the shoes of real doctors whilst expanding our knowledge of common spinal conditions that most of us will face during our lives! Overall, Mr Aylott’s talk was extremely insightful and gave us the opportunity to ask many questions about our potential futures in medicine.”
