Cheltenham Air Quality Education Talk
5th February 2025

We were delighted to welcome Hannah Leatherland to College last Thursday. Hannah is the Air Quality Education Officer for Cheltenham Borough Council and she was invited to speak at Prayers by our very committed and enthusiastic Sustainability Prefects, Helena and Saskia from SFC2.

Hannah spoke about air pollution generally, the situation in Cheltenham, and what we can do to help. There were many memorable facts and images in her speech; for instance:

  • 99% percent of the world’s population lives in areas where air pollution is over WHO safe limits

  • One car idling its engine for just one minute will release 150 balloons worth of air pollution

  • If you are using air con, air pollution can be eight times worse inside a car than outside on the street

The work of people like Hannah is helping to reduce air pollution in Cheltenham, by encouraging active travel, giving advice on the least polluted routes to walk on, and spreading awareness around local schools. Please don’t be surprised though, if your daughter asks you to turn off the car engine when the car is idling…

The Prefects invited Hannah as part of a series of outside speakers coming to College to speak about sustainability issues. The next speaker, in March, is head of a local environmental charity, and the third annual CLC Sustainability Week also takes place in March.
