For the seventh episode of the Cheltenham Ladies’ College Podcast, Dr Woolstenhulme, Teacher in Charge of Academic Scholarship: Enrichment, is joined by Helena (Sixth Form) and Sophia (Upper College) to discuss Academic Scholarships at CLC.
Throughout this episode, Dr Woolstenhulme explains the process of becoming an Academic Scholar and the opportunities, support and guidance that are in place for students.
“We have a bespoke Academic Scholars’ Programme at CLC. The key thing I think about a Scholar is that we’re not looking for the perfect Scholar, the finished product. This is all about growing and developing. The opportunities that are provided are designed to make that happen”. - Dr Woolstenhulme
Helena and Sofia share their experiences of being Academic Scholars and give their advice to prospective and current students who are considering applying.
“Be true to yourself, show your passions and show ‘oh this is what I’m interested in’. You definitely don’t have to excel in that yet. I think it’s being passionate about something and being not afraid to take opportunities and just answer stuff, even when you don’t know whether it’s right or not. I think having that mindset is really important”. - Sophia
An Academic Scholarship encourages students to nurture their intellectual thinking, to step outside of their comfort zone and take part in independent learning.
“It’s made me a very independent person when it comes to my own learning. In the sense that if I want to do something, I kind of have the right mindset and skillset to say ‘I’m interested in this, what can I do now to learn more about it?”. - Helena
At CLC, we foster a culture of academic excellence, fuelled by curiosity, a passion for learning and the confidence to make mistakes along the way.
“There is no cookie cutter perfect Academic Scholar. There’s no expectation for you to be good at every single subject. I think as long as you come into a lesson with the right mindset and say ‘I’m here because I want to learn and I’m going to try my best no matter what. I want to get things right but I also know that making mistakes along the way is the right approach’. No matter what your difficulties or challenges, what your strengths or even what your weaknesses are, as long as you’re authentic and you have passion and drive when you sit in a lesson, I think that’s mainly what [CLC] are looking for”. - Helena
“What is important is your genuine intellectual curiosity for learning”. - Sophia
