Chinese New Year 2022
3rd February 2022

On Tuesday 1st February, we celebrated the 2022 Chinese Year of the Tiger. The day kickstarted with a vibrant, engaging, and entertaining Prayers, with a range of performances, historical information, jokes, and Chinese good luck sweets.

The LC1 and LC2 (Year 7 and 8) pupils performed Gong Xi Gong Xi, a popular Chinese song to celebrate Chinese New Year. The title of this song, 恭喜恭喜 literally means ‘Congratulations, Congratulations’. It has the sense of ‘Good wishes to you for a happy and prosperous New Year’. The students put on a stellar performance – and it was especially poignant for me, as seven years ago I, too, was on the stage performing Gong Xi Gong Xi for the 2016 Chinese New Year.

Faith, Kitty, and I (all SFC2/Year 13) detailed the origins of Chinese New Year and the variations of the Chinese Zodiac animals, in addition to revealing famous celebrities who were born in Year of the Tiger (Drake, Usain Bolt, Queen Elizabeth II). However, I’m not sure if the students were able to retain all this exciting information, because as soon as I mentioned there were sweets under the chairs… well, safe to say that the Princess Hall was no longer quiet!

It was a lovely Prayers to celebrate Chinese New Year, and we want to extend our thanks to everyone involved.

Celebrations for Chinese New Year continued throughout the day, with red certainly being a prominent colour everywhere in the school, and we finished the day with a wonderful Chinese-themed dinner. Wishing you all the best for 2022 – the Year of the Tiger. May this year bring you all you could hope for, and may good fortune shine on you and your loved ones! 新年快乐, 祝你今年财源广进. 心想事成 Isabella, SFC2 (Year 13)
