Minds Underground launched a global Psychology Olympiad competition this year. Nine SFC1 psychologists, Manar, Mille, Phoebe, Vivianne, Karly, Rachel, Eloise, Onyiu and Diana entered Round 1 on 12th February. They had to answer 20 multiple-choice questions in 90 minutes, on a broad range of psychology topics, some of which the students had not yet studied in their A Level or IB courses.
Seven students progressed to the national Round 2 (24th February), where they had to answer four short answer psychology topic questions. All seven made it to the global final over the Easter break. They were given three choices: write an essay on ‘the role of genes in the development of mental illness’ or ‘what is consciousness’ or design a research study.
I am absolutely thrilled to announce that one of our students, Vivianne, was the overall (gold) Winner, with a research study she had designed about how different attachment styles influence the effectiveness of CBT on depression. Huge congratulations go to Vivianne on this amazing achievement for which she also received a voucher to take part in a Minds Underground summer school.
Congratulations also go to Millie who was given an Excellence Award for her essay on ‘What is consciousness?’, and to Kalony for winning an Excellence Award for her essay which explored the question: ‘Although genetic factors can sometimes play a role in the development of mental illness, environmental factors are by far the most important. To what extent do you agree with this statement?’
Well done to everyone for participating!
