We’re saddened to hear of the death of Guild member Dame Clare Marx CBE, DL, MBBS, PRCS.
Dame Clare attended College from 1968 to 1972 after which she went to University College Hospital.
She went on to become the first female orthopaedic surgeon in a London teaching hospital (1990), the first female President of the Royal College of Surgeons (2014-2017) and the first female Chair of the General Medical Council (2019).
She last visited College in 2017 for a Royal College of Surgeons event during which she spoke to students about her inspirational life and career in medicine, and how the role of women in surgery has evolved over the years.
