East Asian Studies Competition
20th June 2024

As an East Asian myself, it was hard to ignore that there was an opportunity to write about my own country, along with several other countries where my friends are from: Korea, Japan and China.

The competition question was ‘How have East Asian Countries influenced life in the UK?” The one topic that came to mind was aerospace - something which I have been very interested in recently. Thus, I started researching about international aerospace contracts between the UK and East Asian countries: the UK and Japan's collaboration on BepiColombo, the Chinese aerospace business Sigma Component’s failure and success, and Korean and UK companies’ (such as Rolls Royce) joint efforts to enhance aircraft safety and reduce emissions.

I’m truly grateful for having this opportunity to write about something that I really liked, and to expand my knowledge on not just aerospace, but also how my culture has influenced the country I currently study in.

I really didn’t expect anything, so I was surprised when I received the email to tell me I had won. Everyone including my friends and teachers congratulated me, which I’m really grateful for.

I had the chance to join a virtual workshop led by the University of Sheffield in regards to East Asian Studies and I learnt a lot from it. It was very enriching.
