Over the course of the last few months, six SFC2 Economics students – Momo, Rachel, Phoebe, Darby, Lizzy and Devani have represented CLC in the Economics World Cup. This is a highly prestigious global competition which this year pitted a total of 421 teams representing 50 different countries against each other over three stages of competition - National, Continental and Global rounds.
Having previously successfully qualified through the UK and European stages of the competition earlier in the year, the team participated in the final Global round, a gruelling set of three different modules (Fundamentals, Deep Comprehension and Thinking and Innovation) taking place over the course of six days, at the start of October. As part of the competition, the team was required to attend lectures given by distinguished Economics lecturers from world-leading universities, read current Economics journals on a variety of subject matter, from Labour Markets and Global Migration patterns, to Auctions and Game Theory applications, and then answer a series of detailed and demanding questions under timed conditions.
The team performed outstandingly well and achieved a hugely creditable 8th place overall in the Global Team Final, winning a World Gold Award, representing the highest performance by a team from the UK and also the second highest performance by a team from Europe.
They also placed 6th globally overall within the Thinking & Innovation module, again the best performance by a UK team and second best from across Europe. As well as team awards, individual performance were also recognised, with Rachel achieving a World Bronze Award for placing within the Global Top 30 of the Deep Comprehension category, and Momo also achieving a World Bronze Award for aggregated performance across the three modules.
This is a wonderful achievement and testament to all of their hard work and dedication to Economics – very well done to you all!
Mr Ratinckx, Head of Economics
