Forum42: Chloë Ashley
13th March 2025

We were delighted to welcome Chloë Ashley, criminal barrister at No.5 Chambers in Birmingham, to the Parabola Arts Centre on Saturday 8th March.

Chloë shared insights into her journey to the Bar and how she sees being a barrister as a “vocation.” She spoke about the criminal justice system as well as reflecting on cases that she has both prosecuted and defended.

It was particularly apt that Chloë spoke on International Women’s Day, which celebrates the achievements of women and promotes gender equality. Chloë has an acute interest in equality, diversity and social mobility, as well as human rights and especially women and children’s rights.

Speaking to an audience of Upper College and Sixth Form students, Chloë’s presentation gave everyone something to think about, whether or not they are interested in a career in Law, and we are extremely grateful that she took the time to come and visit us.

Chloë Ashley’s talk offered a powerful and thought-provoking reflection on her challenging journey to the Bar. She spoke about the significant obstacles she faced, from the fierce competition for pupillage to the financial strain. Her story underscored the harsh realities of entering the legal profession, yet it was her unwavering perseverance that ultimately defined her success and inspired me.

To me, what made Chloë’s speech particularly impactful was her practical advice. She stressed that rejection is not a reflection of one’s worth or potential but rather an inevitable part of growth. By reframing rejection as a learning opportunity, she encouraged aspiring lawyers to remain resilient and persistent. Chloë’s insights extended beyond legal careers, offering a universal lesson in resilience that applies to anyone in the room.
