In November, we had the privilege of welcoming Dame Fiona Reynolds to CLC, where she shared insights from her fascinating and dynamic career.
Her passion for conservation began early in life, as she was raised with a deep connection to nature and the outdoors. This developed into a commitment to environmental conservation, which she further explored while studying geography at the University of Cambridge.
Dame Fiona spoke about her volunteer work with numerous charities after university, and how this journey led her to become the Director General of the National Trust. I particularly enjoyed hearing about how she developed an "Arms Open" approach to conservation, which helped to build more positive connections between people and the places they care for.
This in turn encouraged greater devotion to preservation of National Trust properties. Her book The Fight for Beauty explores the challenges of conserving natural beauty in a world driven by the pursuit of economic growth. Her talk was both inspiring and enriching, and it was truly an honour to have her with us.
