On Thursday 28th November, CLC hosted 60 visiting language students from a variety of local schools for our second French Film Study Day in the PAC.
We provided a series of language activities to begin with, designed to get students talking and to enhance their knowledge of French cinema terms and how to discuss a film. We spent the rest of the day watching two recent French films and discussing them (in French) afterwards.
In the morning, we watched A Plein Temps/Full Time, directed by Eric Gravel, which tells the story of the hectic life of Julie Roy, the head maid at a luxury hotel in Paris who has to manage childcare, the search for a new job and the transport hassles caused by a series of strikes.
The afternoon film, which it is fair to say didn’t appeal to everyone, was Petite Maman, directed by Céline Sciamma, currently one of the world’s most acclaimed directors. This film tells the mysterious story of an eight-year-old child who has recently lost her grandmother and who, while her parents are emptying the grandmother’s house, meets a new friend in the nearby woods.
Both films provided a lot of food for thought, and we were delighted to welcome students from the wider community to join and contribute to a lively discussion.
