On Thursday 9th January, CLC played host to local Sixth Formers for our first German Film Study Day.
Around 30 students and their teachers gathered in the PAC to watch and discuss two recent films. First we saw Die Fetten Jahre sind vorbei/The Edukators from 2004 which shows what happens when a group of young anti-capitalists end up having to kidnap a businessman whose house they have broken into.
In the afternoon we watched Germany’s 2024 Oscar nominee, Das Lehrerzimmer/The Teachers’ Lounge, in which a young teacher investigates a series of thefts in her secondary school.
Pupils found both films gripping and they led to discussions on social justice, inequality, truth and lies and the role of the media. Teachers were impressed at how willing students were to both speak German and mingle with people from other schools.
We are already thinking of the next one, probably on how German cinema has represented life in the GDR.
