Earlier this month, SFC1 A Level Art students, as well as our LC3 and UC4 Art Scholars, enjoyed a trip to see the Phyllida Barlow exhibition 'Unscripted', at Hauser & Wirth, Somerset.
Barlow's work was playful and absurd at times, incorporating or referencing everyday objects. In some rooms her sculptures consumed the space while in others there were expressive drawings or maquettes to be considered.
In some ways, the work was challenging and our students fully engaged, be that through making drawings, taking notes, or recording thoughts and briefly considering everyday materials.
A few of our students reflected as follows:
“It was interesting to see the use of everyday objects within her work.”
“The work broke loose from linear thinking and gave me permission to explore materials.”
“I was interested in how she reworked industrial materials as a reference to childhood and the aftermath of World War II.”
It was a rich and stimulating exhibition, we look forward to seeing how our students' work is impacted by the experience.
