Before half term, Dr Beard gave an engaging lunchtime talk that provided a glimpse into his academic work and the links, understanding and discovery that make it so rich and stimulating. The work journey discussed covered an astonishing 20 years and is ongoing. Here is how Lucy (LC3) reflected on the experience.
On Thursday 6th February, Art Scholars were invited to a History of Art talk by Dr Beard. The talk went into great depth about Paul Nash, and an exhibition that took place in 1938 (very locally) in Gloucester Guild Hall - 'Realism and Surrealism: Several Phases of Contemporary Art'.
We learnt about how Paul Nash was a soldier in the First World War, and loved to draw the countryside. Students were introduced to connections with photos Nash had taken, and how he implemented key features into his work. Many of his works were made in Gloucester, where he liked to spend time with friends.
It was very interesting to learn about how Dr Beard discovered and pieced things together, for example where the exhibition was located, and which works were included. I found it astonishing that in 1938 Picasso’s “Weeping Woman” was selling for only £1,500!
We are very lucky to be able to have opportunities like this often, and thank you to Dr Beard for sharing his research with us.
