On Friday 11th November, 30 UC4 and UC5 (Year 10 and 11) students visited the London College of Fashion (LCF) and the Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum to support their Higher Project Qualification (HPQ) Textiles course.
Jessica Saunders, Director of the Fashion Programme at LCF and CLC Guild member, spoke to the students about the wide range of careers within the fashion industry, other than design, including buying, visual merchandising, pattern cutting and marketing. Acclaimed designer Nabil Nayal, who leads the MA Womenswear course, then gave our students some fascinating insights into his career and his design inspirations.
Finally, the girls took part in a workshop, creating garments on a mannequin from waste fabrics, based on three-word concept: they really enjoyed the creative freedom of collaborative working required for this activity!
The afternoon was spent at the V&A Museum, engaging in focussed research. The HPQ allows the students to set their own project title and explore something that is of deep personal interest, before constructing a textiles-based product, so each student headed off to a different corner of the museum in search of relevant inspiration for their final artefacts! The students made superb use of their day. Here are some of their reflections:
Judy, UC5 (Year 11): “It was great to see the environment of a fashion school first hand and to visit the studios where the second year fashion students were creating their garments.”
Andrea UC4 (Year 10): “I particularly enjoyed the team dress-making workshop at the London College of Fashion. It was a fun experience to create our own dress and it was so nice to work with my friends because everyone had different ideas to contribute to the dress and it felt very rewarding. Visiting the V&A gave me further insights into my HPQ: I was able to learn many new things about my topic, as well as see the works of different artists. I took many pictures for inspiration and pictures of items that I might include in my project.”
Katya, UC4 (Year 10) “I really appreciated the chance to visit the V&A Museum. There were many historical garments, which definitely gave me inspiration for my own HPQ project. I especially enjoyed the Fashion Gallery, where I could explore how fashion has developed throughout time. I will absolutely add some of the elements I saw there to my artefact.”
