We began by learning about Ian's sketching process and how he adapts his drawings to fit different size sketchbooks. He showed us how he creates his bases for his pieces.
After we made and dried our four surfaces, we then found out we had to destroy them! We did this by sanding the paper down, ripping the strips of newspaper and tissue paper we had added, and even adding ink and graphite powder to some.
I really enjoyed the challenges that Ian incorporated into the workshop, whether it was only working in pen, trying to finish our first piece in only 30 minutes or fitting our drawing to 50% of the page. These added challenges meant we focused more on the task instead of our work being perfect.
In all of our pieces we also got to learn Ian’s shading techniques and I feel I became more confident with the messy shading as the afternoon progressed.
I really enjoyed the workshop as I feel I became more confident with drawing fast and using many textures for my base of the piece, along with the mediums I used. I am really grateful for the opportunity and I’m excited to use some of the tricks I learnt in my future pieces.
