For the second consecutive year, two of our French debaters, Zoë and Gia (SFC2), won their regional heat which gave them the opportunity to take part in the Joutes Oratoires Lycéennes national final in March. The final was held at the Institut Français in South Kensington, London, and they completed against a dozen other teams from all over the country.
In advance, they had to prepare to debate the issue of falling birth rates and whether western governments should do anything about them, and the thorny topic of merit-based pay for teachers.
They acquitted themselves well, speaking eloquently and passionately for the side of the argument they were allocated. They narrowly lost both debates but enjoyed the experience enormously and were positive about the whole day and what they learned from it.
Two years of French debating has improved their speaking skills, confidence and ability to think on their feet.
