Mrs Henry, one of our inspiring Teachers of Computing, arranged an exciting challenge for LC1 students recently, culminating in a magical, Harry Potter meets Dragons’ Den-styled competition.
For the assignment, LC1 students worked in teams, having been given the data for a variety of Harry Potter businesses. They were tasked with entering data into Excel and using what they had learned to write formulae to work out the income, expenditure and whether their business had made a profit or loss. They also practised creating bar charts and pie charts. Students then analysed the data and used it to produce a PowerPoint in their groups to present to the class. The classes voted individually for the business that they would choose to invest in. The winning group from each LC1 class was entered into the ‘Wizards’ Den’.
The budding wizards and witches presented their findings to the experienced ‘wizards’: Ms Woodhead (Head of LC), Dr Webb (Head of Computing) and Mr Ratinckx (Head of Economics). The wizard investors then chose the most enchanting and financially astute team as the winner.
They were pleased to announce the champions who ran the ‘Borgin and Burkes’ store: Carmen, Aveline and Taylor.
The event was a creative and captivating way to hone very worthwhile skills in computing and business development – we certainly have some budding entrepreneurs in our midst!
