Our LC2s, LC3s, and a lucky selection of LC1s were treated to an exciting author talk on Friday 21st March during Enrichment time.
It has been several years since Olivia Levez published her brilliant first two books, The Island and The Circus, but the wait is finally over with her new book Silver arriving last year.
Ms Levez came to see us to explain what inspires her stories and to talk us through her writing process. In all her books, the themes of survival and family take centre stage, albeit in very different situations. There is also a commonality in her books’ main characters, all of whom are young girls trying to cope under difficult circumstances and growing strong and independent in the process.
Take Silver, for example, an alien youngster, who’s been raised and trained aboard a spaceship hoping to colonise the Earth. Or Frances, who finds herself marooned on an inhospitable island with nothing but the contents of her school bag to survive. Or Willow, the daughter of a wealthy family, who runs away to escape life with her awful new stepmother.
Ms Levez whetted our appetites with nail-biting excerpts from her books and was bombarded with lots of questions from the audience about her characters, inspiration, and writing tricks.
After her talk, Ms Levez stayed behind for a book signing, with a long queue forming as our students took the chance to take home a copy of one, two, or all three books on offer. We hope they enjoy reading them. Ms Levez certainly had a lovely time meeting so many of her audience and chatting to them about reading, writing, the universe, and, of course, love.
