Opening Prayers 2024
12th September 2024

As the new academic year gets underway there is always the much anticipated moment of ‘Opening Prayers’. This occasion sees the whole community gather together in the PH and is full of upbeat messages, hymn singing, eye-catching reunions, a blessing and an anticipation of all that is to come.

This year our Senior Prefect Mayaan set the tone of her tenure with a most wonderful speech encouraging the students to remember that they are “enough” and to enjoy the journey of learning and becoming.

“Study for exams, and try your hardest, but maintain a balance, and know that whatever happens is okay, and does not make you any less worthy. I know that feeling good enough can be hard in a world where everyone constantly compares themselves, but try not to let comparison steal your joy and pride in your achievements. So as you go forth into this academic year, know that no matter what the number or letter on the paper says, no matter what your parents, peers or that voice in the back of your head says, if you tried your best, and gave your all, that is enough” – Mayaan, SFC2

The Principal also spoke to us about weathered sea glass and referred to a beautiful collection gathered from the Devonshire coastline. The encouragement was to embrace the journey of community and education – where our rough edges get smoothed and where people hold us gently as we grow and flourish.

Finally, we joined in together with our Act of Commitment which was something that Canon Josie wrote for the College and that has become a tradition at CLC.

The Act of Commitment

We come together, from around the world,
to share in the life of our College.

We commit ourselves

to work for the common good,
grounded in the values we share:

mutual respect, personal integrity,
courage and the positive exchange of ideas;
along with respect for the earth,
care and compassion,
and the desire to see each other flourish.

In a spirit of friendship, kindness and co-operation,
we commit ourselves

to building a community
where all may find

a deep sense of belonging,

and where all may thrive in their day to day living.

And so, may we be have hope for the future

gratitude for what has been

And peace in our day to day.

It was a special moment of being together and certainly meant that we have started the academic year with a sense of communal hope and commitment for all that is to come.
