On the 20th March, 18 pupils performed in the CLC Percussion Prizes. There were separate prizes for both drum kit and orchestral percussion.
It was fantastic to hear such a broad range of musical styles on display: from Chloe performing a musically shaped, sensitive performance of Bach’s fugue from the A minor Sonata on Marimba to Nancy’s energy-fueled rendition of Wake Up by Rage Against The Machine there was something to cater for all musical tastes.
We were extremely lucky to be able to welcome Dan Hayward, as our Percussion Prizes adjudicator. Our visiting artist, Dan, has had extensive experience working in musical theatre, performing both on national and international tours and in the West End. Shows that he has performed in include Avenue Q, Evita, Saturday Night Fever, West Side Story, Frozen, Lion King, Wicked, Jesus Christ Superstar and Sister Act. Not only is Dan an experienced performer, he is also a passionate music educator and teaches drum kit at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.
Following the prizes, Dan played a few items from these West End shows. In between items, he talked through the scores, his experiences of performing the music and what it entailed to be a professional musician working both in a pit orchestra and on stage. His performance was so impressive and inspiring for both staff and students! Dan then worked with individual students in a workshop session and gave thoughtful, constructive comments for our students to take away and contemplate in their own practice.
I am so proud of all the students who took part. It takes a huge amount of courage to have a go and perform in the spotlight. Everyone rose to the challenge and allowed their individual musical personalities to shine through.
