Samsung Solve For Tomorrow Competition Success
11th July 2024

On the 15th of November 2023, a short discussion about an overengineered shoe occurred in a small room. Little did we know, seven months later, on the 19th of June, we would be presenting our product, CuraStep, at Samsung KX, where we not only won the People’s Choice Award, but we placed second out of 598 submissions in the national Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Competition.

We left the event with a backpack filled with two Galaxy Tablet S9s, two Galaxy A55s, £1000 and a heavy trophy.

CuraStep is a smart IoT biometric shoe designed to address the unique challenges faced by diabetic patients prone to developing foot wounds, with a focus on safeguarding against complications resulting from the loss of sensation in the feet.

In a nutshell, CuraStep utilises pressure and infrared sensors to predict ulceration patterns in diabetics, acting as the nervous system for those who experience peripheral neuropathy (the loss of sensation in your foot). This information is fed back to our app, which sends notifications to the user, telling them to adjust the fitting of the shoe, thereby offloading the pressure on the foot.

Throughout the past seven months, we’ve attended weekly workshops, picking up skills from design engineering to building a storyline for a pitch. We’ve also attended sessions with leading designers in Samsung EU, Mettle Studio and the CEO of Batch.Works. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn from top marketers and designers in the industry. This whole journey was one of a kind, helping us turn our idea into a reality.

The best part about it? The plethora of enthusiastic individuals we met from different backgrounds, all sharing the same vision of changing the world with technology. We’re glad to say we’ve formed lifelong friendships from all across the country.

And of course, we couldn’t have done all of this without College. Thank you so much Mr Plimmer and the EET Department for providing us with the equipment to build our prototypes. Thank you Mr Sumner, Dr Woolstenhulme, Dr Parker and Mr White for supporting us throughout the entire journey, and Miss Muhlberg, for creating such an amazing display in the library documenting CuraStep’s journey. Last, but not least, Miss Bevan for promoting CuraStep on CLC’s social media platforms and boosting our votes to win the People’s Choice Award.

We are so excited for the coming months where we will be put through an accelerator program by Samsung to develop CuraStep further.
