Second place in Articulation Regional Final
22nd February 2024

Following her success in winning the College internal competition, in late January Sybil (SFC1) took part in the Articulation Regional Final at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, Coventry. This is her account of the day:

Finally, the long-anticipated day had arrived, Dr Beard, Mrs Coulson, Suri (SFC2) and I set off to Coventry, where I would compete in the Regional Final of the National Gallery’s Articulation competition. Before the event began, Dr Beard took us on a quick detour to Coventry Cathedral, where we had the opportunity to marvel at the modern architectural design, Graham Sutherland’s remarkable tapestry and various sculptures by Jacob Epstein.

Although incredibly nervous, this quick visit fuelled me with inspiration and I soon found myself sitting in line amongst other competitors to present my work: A ten-minute presentation on the historical power and influence of Caves of the Thousand Buddha in Dunhuang, China.

In the Herbert Museum, our group witnessed a whirlwind of utterly fantastic presentations - we were transported across time; from the exploration of Michelangelo's unfinished sculptures, evaluations of the depictions of Aphrodite and Pygmalion’s Galatea… to almost being moved to tears by contemporary prints of a Chinese artist’s reflections on his family.

Then suddenly, it was my turn. I hurried on stage, bringing my notes and flashcards, feeling terrified once again, in front of a packed audience. Turns out, I didn't do half bad! I ended up bringing back the second-place prize in the Articulation competition, adjudicated by the renowned learning curator John Sleigh.

Overall, the confidence, skill in presentation and enthusiasm of everyone who participated left me in complete awe - making me beyond thankful for this exciting opportunity. It gave me the chance to learn more about the diverse and intriguing topics my peers delved into, to meet new people, and to develop my confidence in public speaking - which wouldn't have been possible without the wonderful support that staff and students have given me in competing in this competition. - Sybil (SFC1)
