SFC French film study day
23rd November 2023

CLC hosted a film study day on the subject of Le cinéma et la banlieue (suburbs) for 90 local sixth-formers and their teachers on Monday 20th November.

We watched two films that complement the one we are studying for A level, La Haine, which is about three young men from a tough suburb and their dealings with the police and others.

The day started with a lecture from Dr. Reece Goodall from the University of Warwick on how the banlieue has been portrayed in French cinema in recent years. Then we watched two superb examples of the banlieue film: the gripping Les Misérables (2019), directed by Ladj Ly shows three police officers and their lives as they patrol the housing estates of a tough area. Bande de Filles/Girlhood (2015), directed by Céline Sciamma, gives us a female perspective on what remains a very masculine world with its story of a 16-year-old and her relationships with family and friends.

After each film, students discussed it in small groups, answering questions devised by the French Department, and then fed back answers to the rest of the audience.

Teachers and students alike really enjoyed the day, praising the content, delivery and the delicious lunch we all enjoyed in Bayshill Court Dining Room. Colleagues from other schools are hoping we’ll organise Spanish and German film days in the coming months!
