On Friday 20th October, 16 SFC1 students set off for their Gold DofE practice. Five students were kayaking and 11 walking.
The challenges posed by the weather meant that all plans needed to be very flexible.
The walking expedition went ahead largely unhampered in the Black Mountains – we had a soggy expedition, with students refreshing all of their expedition skills in readiness for their qualifying expedition in the summer.
The kayakers set off initially to Croft Farm for a training day on the lake, with the expedition originally supposed to be take them to the River Severn. Due to the water levels, the river was unsuitable so the students completed their practice on the Gloucester & Sharpness and Brecon & Monmouth Canals. It was a positive experience learning new skills in the rain.
