On Monday 17th June, SFC1 Politics students had the exciting opportunity to visit the Houses of Parliament and the UK Supreme Court as part of their studies.
After an early start, the students arrived in London and headed straight to the Supreme Court. Established in 2009, it is the centre of the UK justice system and it was fantastic for the aspiring lawyers amongst the group to see the inner workings of the British judiciary.
The UK Supreme Court is also the final court of appeal for a number of commonwealth nations and the students were lucky enough to be able to watch a live case that had come from Barbados!
Following a quick pit-stop for lunch, the girls headed to the Houses of Parliament. As Parliament was not currently sitting due to the election campaign, the students had the rare opportunity to explore both the House of Commons and the House of Lords at their leisure.
We learned so many interesting facts about the chambers and the parliamentary procedures, including how MPs vote in debates. The students were particularly excited at being able to stand at the dispatch box!
Following the tour, we had a workshop on the impact of pressure groups on democracy which allowed students to show off their knowledge in formulating plans of influence for different sectors.
The trip was a huge success and really brought to life some of the more abstract concepts of the Politics course. We are very much looking forward to taking the new SFC1 students next year!
