On Wednesday 18th September, we held our annual SFC2 Academic Scholars’ Conference.
In the summer of their SFC1 year, our Academic Scholars are eligible to participate in a Summer Research Project with Minds Underground. They are matched with an academic or industry leader in an area of their choosing and work together with them on a project.
This year, students studied a whole range of subjects, from French theatre to limb regeneration, via AI and racing cars, the decarbonisation of air travel, and Ethics and Metaphysics. Upon completing their project, the students produced an academic poster based on their research and they presented their work to members across the College community, including staff and students.
The event was a huge success and gave the opportunity to not only showcase the fantastic academic work being undertaken by our students, but also for conversations across year groups and areas of College. The event is always a highlight of the year and it is an absolute pleasure to see the students’ knowledge and confidence grow.
Kaya, SFC2 Academic Scholar:
I really appreciated the opportunity to work with a mentor in my chosen field and being able to learn from them, discuss my topic with them, brainstorm and bounce ideas off them. I learned a lot about UK law in general as well as specific case studies. I thought the research process was very interesting and increased my interest in law.
Maddy, SFC2 Academic Scholar:
The summer research project provided us with an amazing opportunity to further explore our chosen fields (Medicine, in my case) through one-on-one mentoring sessions. It was extremely stimulating to be pushed by our mentor to consider questions I'd never considered before, and she helped me progress and become confident in my understanding of limb regeneration. I now appreciate how novel treatments hold much potential for the future of Medicine.
We presented what we did in an Academic Conference, where students from across the school and teachers attended to learn and challenge us on our research. It was so rewarding and was an invaluable opportunity that I'm very grateful to have.
Alexandra, SFC2 Academic Scholar:
I had the chance to talk to a Rolls Royce project manager and get his perspective on sustainable aviation and the potential of solutions I had looked into.
The conference is a great chance for staff and students throughout College, from LC1 up, to learn in detail about the projects the SFC2 Scholars had worked on over the summer.
Raisa, LC3 scholar, who attended the conference:
Going to the SFC2 Conference was amazing. It was such an enriching experience to see how much effort the A Level and IB sixth formers had put in to their individual projects, and also how they had grown through the school years to find out what they wanted to learn and dedicate their lives too. The stalls were filled with posters ranging from Law and the Civil Court, to France’s unknown history, to how Paracetamol is on a molecular level. All the older years embraced our lack of knowledge and integrated with us so well to make sure we understood. Plus the brownies were great!
Mrs Williams, Biology teacher, who attended the conference:
Walking into the PH last Wednesday evening was quite something. The atmosphere was thriving and seeing the SFC2 Scholars speaking to their teachers and their peers so articulately about the work they had carried out over the summer was inspirational.
It was clear how much the students had gained from conducting their own research with support from academics in their chosen field. What impressed me the most was the passion and confidence with which the students spoke and answered questions. Huge credit to all of the scholars involved for all their hard work.
