SFC2 Biology students enjoyed a beautifully sunny day visiting Bishops Wood, a Field Studies Council centre.
Students learnt about the importance of biodiversity and how we can sample and investigate species abundance and distribution. They put this into practice with a variety of ecology fieldwork techniques; investigating the distribution of plant species by sampling with quadrats and point quadrats, and through pond dipping.
Elise, SFC2
The morning was dedicated to exploring and applying new sampling techniques to assess the biodiversity of both woodland and meadow habitats. This provided us with practical experience in understanding ecosystems and their complexity. In the afternoon, we shifted our focus to aquatic life, using nets to collect and identify creatures from the pond. One of the most memorable moments for me was encountering a leech for the first time!
