Gloucestershire Young Carers

Prayers Talk

It was lovely hosting Toni from Gloucestershire Young Carers who told us all about the charity, where the money will go and how we can support Young Carers in our area. We look forward to working with them over the next two years as one of our chosen College charities, voted for by students and staff.

‘Galentines’ Sweet Sale

Students also celebrated ‘Galentines’. Cards and sweeties were sent to girls who signed up to raise money for Gloucestershire Young Carers.

Clothing Sale

Re-use and recycle! Following the success of our last clothing sale we held in January, Waka and Valentina collected and organised the clothes and raised £233 for Gloucestershire Young Carers.

LA Fires Fundraising

A group of dedicated LC3s wanted to raise money for the LA fires. The girls spent nine hours baking at their Houses and managed to raise £468.95.

The money will go to IFAW who provide emergency support for people and animals impacted by Los Angeles wildfires.

Menstrual Product Drive

We are running our menstrual product drive for St Hilda’s East again. Please donate any period items to the boxes in Houses.

Care Homes

We work very closely with our local partner care homes and our SFC1s, who volunteer at Astell House, wanted to buy an egg incubator for them. They are going to hatch baby chicks with residents over the next few weeks.

The girls did a bake sale and managed to raise £448.20 for Astell House who can now buy the incubator.

‘We just wanted to express our appreciation for all of the hard work that the girls have done this year, they have built some truly precious bonds with some of our residents. And  especially raising such a fantastic amount for the living eggs with their bake sale. We are expecting the eggs to be delivered soon,  and if possible would like a few of the girls who have been involved to come and help us set them up in their enclosures and name a few of them.’ - Astell House

What a ‘cracking’ effort girls.

Easter Egg Drive

This year we are running an Easter Egg drive for Cheltenham OpenDoor and Foodbank. If you would like to donate an Easter Egg, please drop one off in the boxes in your House.

Community Volunteering

It’s been great working with our partners again. Our girls have been volunteering across Cheltenham, getting into the community and connecting with residents in our local area.

They have been reading with children in primary schools, hearing stories about the past from our elderly residents, arranging food at the Foodbank, mucking out horses at the RDA and mentoring Refugees.

Students have also been reading poetry and celebrated the 102nd birthday of one of the lovely residents at Astell House.

We are really looking forward to all the community events coming up over next term too.

In March:

  • Our co curricular club ‘Generation Connect’, are running an Art workshop with residents at Sandfields Care Home. They will be painting canvases with the residents who can then hang them in their rooms.

  • Some students will be doing a spring concert at Faithfull House and Astell House. They have chosen the songs and planned the concert; the residents are really looking forward to hearing the live music.

In April:

  • Three girls from CLC will be running a Poetry Day at Gloucester Road Primary school. They are running workshops for Year 1,2, 3 and 4 to inspire a love of poetry in young children.

The girls have planned the lessons and resources and are looking forward to giving back in our community and hoping some children might learn to love poetry.
