Sport Roundup 22nd November
20th November 2024

Basketball

We are excited to highlight CLC’s basketball team who faced Cheltenham Chargers in a thrilling match. With the scores level entering the final quarter, CLC (led by Angelina and Jessica) held on to win by two points. Thank you to everyone, both staff and pupils, who came to support this inaugural match, helping to make the atmosphere so electric!

Isabella (LC3), a member of Cheltenham Chargers basketball club, was named team captain and voted Most Valuable Player for the 2023/24 season. Her impressive performance led to an invitation to try out for the Basketball England Aspire Programme in October 2024, where she was selected as one of 18 players from the South-West region. Isabella will now participate in monthly intensive training sessions and compete in the Aspire All-Star Tournament in Birmingham in mid-2025. She may have the opportunity to be selected for the Under 15s England National Team.

Badminton

On Saturday 9th November, we hosted the annual School Girls Doubles Badminton Tournament across both sports halls. We welcomed Downe House, Cheltenham College, Dean Close, Winchcombe, St Edward's and Millfield.

We had two U16 teams taking part and one U18 team. The format of the event meant that every point counted and all the players partnered everyone in their team.

When the final scores were calculated, our U18 team came in second place out of six schools, and our U16 teams came in second and third place out of seven schools. They all worked exceptionally hard, fighting for every point. Well done all!

Hockey

Wednesday 6th November saw the whole of LC1 and LC2 play in fixtures against Bromsgrove School, which included lots of fabulous attacking hockey around our focus of invading space with height and width.

Saturday 9th November saw a morning of LC1 and LC2 games vs King’s Gloucester, with some thrilling matches including lots of CLC goals and a last-minute winner for the U12As. The afternoon was a really tightly matched set of fixtures with Honor keeping a clean sheet on her debut in goal. The U18, U15 and U14 teams all tightly matched with some fabulous connected attacking play on display.

Last week saw the annual Emily Sumaria memorial match - this is always a special occasion and, under the lights, the 1st team had an amazing battle with Cheltenham College finishing 0-0. The game hung in the balance and we were pleased to share the cup.

Skiing

Twelve ski team members raced in Aldershot on Saturday 9th November, marking our first competition there.

Congratulations to everyone, especially Skye, who posted CLC's fastest time and Mischa who had an incredible first run.

Meanwhile, Julia competed in her first international FIS races for UNIQ in Dubai, finishing 5th and 7th across three events – an outstanding achievement and a great platform from which to build her season.

Lacrosse

The Senior Lacrosse team travelled away to Stowe with the famous picturesque National Trust property in the background. It was a split fixture featuring a win and a loss. The 2nd team combined with a brilliant group of U15s improved their performance with every quarter of play, finishing strong. Congratulations to our 1st team for the strong victory – not just a win in terms of numbers on the scoresheet, but more importantly because of the application of learning, determination under pressure and the cohesive team performance to achieve the positive scoreline.

Squash

Last week, our Sixth Form squash team competed against Wycliffe College and Malvern College in Stage One of the National Schools Competition, and all played brilliantly!

They beat Malvern College and lost to Wycliffe College, who have an academy and are renowned for being strong in Squash. Coming in second place puts us through to Stage Two of the competition!

Table Tennis

On Thursday 14th November, we had Senior House Table Tennis. It was great to see all Houses represented and more competitors taking part with two players from each House. Congratulations to St Austin’s for coming out as winners for the senior event.

On Saturday, we made the most of having no home netball matches at Well Place and invited external tennis club players to our school. We had 14 CLC girls take place from LC1 to SFC1. They played four matches throughout the afternoon, partnering with and against girls and boys from other clubs. Many of these students have individual lessons and it is great to see them progress their skills through these matches.

Swimming

Tuesday 12th November featured an exciting three-way meet against two strong swimming schools, St Mary's Calne and Stroud High School.

In a series of closely contested races, our swimmers showed incredible determination, digging deep to deliver their best performances. Special congratulations to Caitlin (SFC1) for breaking the seven-year-old SFC1 backstroke record, and to Michelle and Caitlyn (UC5), Elizabeth and Georgie (LC2), and Georgia (LC1) for achieving personal best times. Overall, it was a fantastic display of team racing - well done to everyone involved.

Equestrian

Last week, Sofia made her international debut on her new horse Honey, at Le Mans in France. Sofia took part in three competitions, winning all three. Thanks to her results in France, she has been selected to be the GB U18 representative at the Dressage Young Stars Championship in Aachen, Germany, next month.

Sofia’s aim for the year is selection to the GB U18 team for the European Championships in the summer, and she’s making great progress already! Well done Sofia.

Netball

There were fantastic games of netball played by the senior teams away at Royal Grammar School on Saturday afternoon. The players demonstrated resilience and grit as they matched the high intensity and speed set by RGS, working tirelessly to maintain possession of the ball and maximise scoring opportunities.

Throughout the court, we were fantastic at applying man-to-man pressure to our opposition, forcing errors and turning over ball from our opposition. A special mention to shooters Issy and Tessa, whose shooting accuracy was over 90%.
