Sport Roundup 24th January
23rd January 2025

Volleyball

The Volleyball Team have been working hard behind the scenes and embraced the opportunity to host Malvern College for a fixture.

On court they demonstrated well-established connections and understanding of each other's positions. They utilised their strengths to successfully outwit their opponent and accumulate points on the scoreboard.

Anthea was voted Player of the Match by the away side for her ability to tenaciously attack the ball at the net and her serves that arrive like rockets. Well done to the team for putting on such a dominant performance.

Skiing

Alice (UC4) had a fantastic ski run in the Anglo-Scottish Champs winning her U16 slalom race and finishing as the quickest female overall in Verbier last week.

Good luck to the girls heading to Flaine for the British Schoolgirls’ Race over the exeat weekend.

Badminton

The Badminton Team welcomed two teams from Malvern College last Saturday for singles and doubles match play.

Every point contributed and they played in their small teams using lots of different doubles formations. The students communicated well with the opposition working out their patterns of play and organised themselves superbly.

Well done for a fantastic afternoon of Badminton played in great spirit.

On Saturday, our Badminton Team hosted St Edward’s Oxford. Lots of matches were played in a great atmosphere with CLC coming out on top.

Dance

Xuan Xuan (UC5) attended the 7th Annual Hong Kong Youth and Children Dance Competition and did a variation from the Awakening of Flora.

She won the 16+ age category as well as Best Performance award for the session.

Lacrosse

Although the annual St Mary’s Cup Lacrosse Tournament had to be cancelled due to the weather, the 1st and 2nd teams played a straight fixture against St Mary’s Calne in a modified version of the Olympic Sixes.

Using a smaller pitch and blending the best of lacrosse with influences from basketball and ice hockey, Sixes is a fast paced, high scoring game that requires quick reactions, precise technical skills and innovative tactics.

CLC was on fire, showcasing improved defensive shapes, great transitions and stunning goals. Keep an eye out for information from Ms Cornbrooks about a trip to The Fly in the summer term where Great Britain’s 2028 Olympic hopefuls will be showcasing their skills.

Meanwhile, the LC lacrosse teams showcased the months of hard work that has occurred since September when they first played Westonbirt. The U12s improved the scoreline each quarter and focused on creating team moments of possession which resulted in a beautiful goal created from defensive transition. Both the U14s and the U13s took the opposition to the wire in one goal thrillers. The atmosphere was electric!

Three senior teams took to the field in preparation for the upcoming end of season tournament. Great moments of textbook goals and defensive double teams were seen in every match.  A huge well done to all the players who participated in the joint lacrosse and netball Super Saturday.

Hockey

Last weekend, hockey had an amazing Saturday morning of indoor sport with Cheltenham Junior Hockey Club, playing a round robin tournament with LC1 and LC2 students. Some fantastic hockey was played with many trying indoor for the first time - a very exciting future ahead!

This week we had a fabulous morning at King's School Worcester with the U12/13s playing a mixed tournament. The girls all had fun and there was some fantastic hockey played.

The afternoon saw a very strong King's 1st team challenging us to play our best hockey. We utilised some fantastic shape to retain the ball with a marked improvement in both receiving and passing elements. The 2nd team pushed King's all the way, conceding a goal in the last moments to lose a tight game. The U14’s and U15’s had some fabulous passages of play in really tight games with some standout performances from players all over the pitch. We are tremendously proud of you all for embodying our CLC sporting values!

Netball

We enjoyed some fantastic netball matches last week. Our U12 and U13 teams played Pates Grammar School in mid-week fixtures. The girls played hard-fought and competitive matches with a strong focus on maintaining possession, the teams worked collaboratively to keep the ball moving towards the goal.

Saturday brought our exciting Super Saturday Netball and Lacrosse fixtures against Westonbirt, with every age group in action. In netball, the U12s and U13s demonstrated excellent teamwork within their squads, focusing on improving their passing and catching skills to drive the ball to goal. Standout performances came from Sofia, Tasha, Georgie, Seraphina, Ugonna and Natalie (all LC2).

In the afternoon, the U14, U15, and senior teams worked diligently to refine their transitions and passing up the court, showcasing their determination and skill. Well done to everyone for a fantastic weekend of netball!

Squash

On Saturday, we welcomed many different schools for our annual Squash School Girls Competition. We played exceptionally well, fighting till the very end. It was a team event where every point mattered!

The standard was high, and we were thrilled to have come second - narrowly missing out on 1st place by just three points! Thank you and well done to all our fabulous players who represented the school.
