Sport Roundup 8th November
7th November 2024

Golf

The CLC Golf team played in the first round of the Independent Schools Scratch Golf Cup against St Edward’s School, Oxford.

The team performed brilliantly, and each player won their individual match. This time last year, CLC lost to St Edward’s, so this result is fantastic and shows the dedication and improvements made by the team. CLC now progress into the next round against Dean Close.

Running

Cross Country is such a personal challenge, and our team rose to the occasion with resilience and determination despite the waterlogged, muddy conditions at the County Round for the English Schools Cup Competition.

They dug deep throughout the race and found that extra push in the final sprint to the finish, making for some truly exciting competition. Well done everyone.

Before half term, the Lower College House Running event took place. Well done to all for stepping up and giving your all for your House.  The results are as follows:

Skiing

Before half term, the Ski team attended the National Indoor Race in Hemel Hempstead Snow Centre.

Congratulations to Julia who came 3rd in the U19s and to Alice who was quickest overall and 1st U16.

The A team claimed second place overall just one point behind South Hamstead High - an outstanding result.

Badminton

Before half term, we took 10 Squash players in UC, along with an U16 and U14 Badminton team to St Edward's School, Oxford. It was particularly exciting using their secret tunnel under the road to get to the Sports Centre!

In both Squash and Badminton we had great personal achievements. All players showed great competitive spirit, well done.

We've had some great news with some of our students being talent spotted by our county coaches in Gloucestershire.

Gianna (LC3) has been chosen to represent the county in Badminton. She will go with Annie (UC5) who is also playing in the same county tournaments but in the U17 age groups. We wish Gianna and Annie all the best for their up and coming matches.

Lacrosse

CLC hosted the Junior Welsh Rally and fielded four teams across three age groups. This annual tournament is organised by Wales Lacrosse to support the development of young players and provide learning opportunities in a competitive environment.

As it is not a qualifying tournament, they use a format that allows everyone to play each other twice; this creates a fantastic teaching opportunity with direction for focus and adjustments on the day.

It was wonderful to see all CLC players practicing skills in between games and applying advice to improve tactical execution under pressure.

Well done to the U13 team who achieved improved scorelines in the second round as a result. A shout out to LC3, Grace, LC2 Natalie and LC1 Libby for being game changers on the day. They set the tone on the pitch and inspired others to step up too. Also, a round of applause for all our amazing goalkeepers – they need to have the skills of a field player and then some extraordinary superpowers on top of that!

Hockey

It's a busy season for all the hockey teams with lots of major tournaments and fixtures. This means plenty of opportunities for development and learning to manage performance preparation and fixtures.

The U18s narrowly missed out on regional qualification last month where a couple of goals would have made a huge difference in a very tight qualification pool.

The U13s went unbeaten through their county tournament, unfortunately missing out on semi finals due to a couple of draws in key games.

Before the half term, the U16 team qualified for the West Regional finals on 28th November.

The squad played excellent hockey throughout the County qualifying tournament showing great tactical and technical skill to secure their semi final spot vs Balcarras. A 1-0 win took them through to the final vs KLB. Unfortunately, we lost the final 1-0 with the last touch of the game but both teams progressed to the regional finals.

Squash

Sofia, Sarah and Giselle have been selected to attend the Squash Gloucestershire County Training which takes place at East Glos Club. This is a great achievement to be invited and play amongst the other county players. Well done all.

Rowing

During the half term break, sisters Florrie and Delphine couldn't resist a rowing event on home ground at Gloucester Canal.

The race was a time trial style event over 1750 metres. The dynamic duo of Florrie and Delphine were the first boat setting off on beautifully clear water. The girls raced their socks off and pushed off the crews in sight to win their race and gain a 12 second personal best time. They showed excellent grit and determination, as well as dedication wanting to race during their half term. Well done girls, we are super proud of you!

Equestrian

Having previously competed for GB on ponies, Sofia (SFC1) is targeting selection for GB U18 at the European Championships in the summer.

As part of her journey, Sofia competed at Aintree over half term in an U21 class on her horse Boccelli. Sofia took the win with a great performance continuing her brilliant year.
