Sports Roundup July 2022
13th July 2023

Skiing

Recently, the LC1 and LC2 (Year 7 and 8) skiers plus captain Katia (SFC1 / Year 12) travelled to the dry ski slope at Gloucester Ski and Snowboard Centre to participate in the Gloucester Summer Race League against clubs from all over the country. For most, it was the first opportunity to compete in a ski race. Highlights included Daphne and Eva (LC1) both securing good times in their slalom rounds, while Katia showed how much progress she has made since joining Gloucester Ski Club for training twice a week since Christmas. Only two of the best boys could place ahead of Alice (LC1) who finished third out of all 131 male and female competitors of all ages.

Everyone enjoyed the dual slalom event in the afternoon which comprised three head-to-head races against competitors with similar finish times from the morning’s slalom races.

House Athletics

This year’s House Athletics was a day to remember! There are many stories of personal triumph as well as pupils demonstrating the fundamental ideals of being supportive, ambitious, brave, resilient, motivated, disciplined and optimistic. Many pupils experienced their first time competing in an event and showed real determination to do their best for their House.

There were numerous examples of pupils’ giving their all – such as in the very close LC3 (Year 9) shot put competition or in the Junior 800m event where several competitors chased each other to get over the line first. They demonstrated focus and determination, and pushed themselves to keep going, displaying great fortitude.

It was a delight to see age group event records being broken, such as Sorekunmi (LC2 / Year 8) in the javelin, Anya (LC3 /Year 9) in the discus and Megan (LC1 / Year 7) in the high jump.

Of course, the British weather got the better of us when the rain stopped play midway through the morning. However, in true CLC style, we turned to Plan B and the Health and Fitness Centre (HFC) Sports Hall became the new venue with fantastic noisy support from their peers.

The PE Department was extremely proud of everyone who overcame the challenges of the day and made it a very special event.

CLC Community Day

Following House Athletics in the morning, we had the amazing House ‘Just Dance’ Competition which kicked off the afternoon of activities. This was a wonderful spectacle for all to see, again hosted in the HFC Sports Hall. There was cheering and clapping as each House rose to the challenge of producing and performing their very own version of Just Dance.

Activities were brought inside due to the rain – we had a bouncy obstacle course and Hungry Hippos taking centre stage of Sports Hall 2, along with badminton, table tennis and giant Jenga to name but a few games.

A mass game of dodgeball took place with staff and families joining in and, again in true CLC style, pupils had a brilliant water fight out on Field! The catering team produced a delicious afternoon tea served alongside Pimms on the balcony as the rain dried up and the sun again shone. Thank you to everyone who came and joined the CLC community.

USA Lacrosse Tour

The lacrosse tour to the Baltimore-Washington area has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The pupils played in seven games against various oppositions and watched the best players from 30 countries compete in the Women’s Lacrosse World Championships.

CLC became invested in England’s journey over the week; we were in the crowd to see them beat Australia and win bronze in three overtime periods! It was an incredible opportunity for learning so many things, as well as making new friends within the group and across the pond.

It is a trip none of us will ever forget!

Equestrian

After a phenomenally successful spring and a very competitive selection process, SFC2 (Year 13) student Jaymee has been selected to be on the team for the Junior European Eventing Championships. This is a huge achievement. Best of luck to Jaymee at the championships which will be held at Hartpury at the end of July.

Several CLC riders have been selected for the 2022 British Eventing Youth Team Championships to be held at Bishop Burton College in Yorkshire at the beginning of August. The riders have been selected from those who have successfully competed in national qualifiers and have shown consistently good results throughout the last year. The competition consists of each rider completing dressage, cross country and show jumping tests over three days. Only 10 riders are selected per team from each region and the standard is incredibly high.

In the 90cm class, Katherine (UC4 / Year 10) has been selected. In the 100cm class, Isla (UC5 / Year 11) was selected, with Matilda (SFC1 / Year 12) as a reserve, and in the 2* International class, Laura (SFC2 / Year 13) has been selected.

This is a huge achievement for the girls who have worked incredibly hard - congratulations all!

At Rectory Farm we welcomed some new faces to the Equestrian Team. Penelope (LC1 / Year 7) had an amazing start, winning her very first schools competition representing CLC! Alivia (LC1 / Year 7) jumped a superb clear round in her first competition ever. Well done girls!

In the 90cm class, Katherine (UC4 / Year 10) and Christina (LC1 / Year 7) and Ludmila (UC5 / Year 11) took team third with Persia (LC1 / Year 7), Bérénice (LC2 / Year 8) and Tamara (LC3 / Year 9) taking fifth.

In the 100cm class, Katherine placed individual sixth, and Matilda (SFC1 / Year 12) took fifth in the competitive 110cm.

Last weekend, we were back at Rectory Farm with Persia (LC1 / Year 7), Bel (UC4 / Year 10) and Bérénice (LC2 / Year 8) in team second in the 80cm, with Bérénice taking the individual win with a very fast clear round.

In the 90cm, three good rounds from Persia, Bel and Bee secured another second team placing, with Persia in individual ninth.

At the Bengrove One Day Event, Katherine (UC4 /Year 10) produced an outstanding result to win the 90cm class and qualify for the championships with Christina (LC1 / Year 7) in eighth place.

Lower College Celebration of Sport

A fantastic evening celebrating Lower College’s brilliant achievements this year took place last Friday. We welcomed our guest speaker, Ellen Barber who is currently a GB U23 and Senior British Combined Events champion and qualified for the Commonwealth Games. She spoke to all of Lower College, helping to inspire the future generation of athletes.

Awards were presented to students in the following categories: Supportive, ambitious; brave; resilient; committed; motivated; disciplined; and optimistic. It was wonderful to have Lower College altogether to celebrate and review their whole year in Sport and PE.

Congratulations to all of this year’s award winners!
