Sports Roundup November 2023
24th November 2023

Cross Country

Last week marked the peak of the Cross Country fixtures, with our Junior and Senior teams participating in the English Schools Regional Cup Team Final at Bromsgrove School.

With just a few days to recover, CLC was again well represented at the Cheltenham & District Championships. The highlight of the event was Si Ning (UC5) gaining automatic selection. Upper College students Fiona, Carys, and Beth also managed to secure strong finishes, packing out the top 20 places. Congratulations to all!

Netball

Netball Success at County Tournament

Congratulations to the U14 squad who this week became the Winners of the Gloucestershire County Netball Tournament. This means they have qualified for the Regional Tournament in February.

They were outstanding throughout the competition winning every single match.  There were fantastic displays of teamwork, resilience and flexibility in challenging weather conditions and competitive play.

Hockey

West Indoor Regionals Finals

Both the U16 and U18 teams performed well, but a special well done to the U18s who qualified unbeaten to West Finals alongside Monkton Combe School. After success at the Indoor Qualifiers, the U18 Indoor Team travelled to Wellington on Sunday for the West Indoor Hockey finals.

They played some phenomenal hockey but unfortunately lacked the consistency to put together a totally controlled performance against very strong opposition. It was a fantastic learning opportunity for a squad that will largely still be at CLC for the 2024/25 tournaments.

Emily Sumaria Memorial Hockey Match vs Cheltenham College

This is always a special occasion to celebrate the life of former pupil Emily Sumaria, and to raise awareness for the charity, SUDEP Action. Well done to the squad who played and represented CLC with heart and tenacity, and carried themselves tremendously in front of a big crowd.

U14s at West Regional Finals

The U14 team and County Champions recently headed to Clifton College for the West Regional Finals. They played some fantastic hockey, however unfortunately missed out on progressing due to one of the most dominant 0-0 draws the staff have ever seen. The group played with amazing shape and controlled space and territory.

Lacrosse

On Saturday, 120 players represented CLC across all age groups against St Helen and St Katharine.

During the morning matches, four LC1 and LC2 teams focused on continuing to develop their skills in game situations with a particular concentration on attacking principles, while demonstrating progress in all areas.

Across two rounds in the afternoon, six teams played competitive matches, showcasing some incredible attacking partnerships that created spectacular team goals in all age groups.

A special mention to the LC3 year group who capped off a wonderful week of sport across the board with the goal of the day - a ¾ field clear from goalkeeper Fity to Lily, who drew the double and off loaded beautifully to Maya for the quick stick finish - textbook!

Guild member receives first cap for Scotland

Congratulations to Guild member Phoebe Thornett, who last weekend earned her first Senior International Cap for Scotland Lacrosse in a test match against Czechia. Phoebe has also been selected for the Senior Women’s 2024 tour to the USA ahead of the 2024 European Championships in Portugal.

Phoebe last visited College when she was a guest speaker at our Lower College Celebration of Sport in June. We wish her every success and look forward to hearing from her following the USA tour in February.

Badminton

Gloucestershire League Badminton Fixture

LC and UC players competed in the Gloucestershire League at Bournside School on Sunday afternoon. They competed in singles and doubles against local club players. It was a high standard and they remained resilient throughout. Their performances improved substantially over the afternoon.

Squash

The U16 team played the first round of the National Schools Tournament against Wycombe Abbey and Downe House recently. Well done to Sarah, Caitlyn, Gabby, Kathryn, Iris and Giselle for some outstanding play. On Tuesday 21st November, CLC played Westgate School in the Squash National Schools Competition. It was a very close competition with CLC demonstrating great determination and growing confidence.

Volleyball

CLC recently took part in their first volleyball fixture against Bromsgrove. It was wonderful to see confidence grow as the games went on and the team quickly got into their stride, dominating play and taking the win in the third and final game. The pupils were well organised, encouraging of each other and positive throughout. A great afternoon of Volleyball.

Swimming

Cheltenham Challenge Cup

Our senior and U15 swimmers participated in the 1st Round of the Cheltenham Challenge Cup against Dean Close and Cheltenham College. Right from the start, pupils demonstrated remarkable determination and spirit in their swims. This resulted in an impressive total of 14 new personal bests, and Chizzy's outstanding form continued for a second week, breaking the LC2 50m Backstroke (Back) record.

The team set a strong points position as they head into the 2nd Round in the spring. Congratulations to everyone, and a special acknowledgement to the following individuals for setting new personal bests. Well done!
