The Princess Hall was alive to the amazing sounds of Symphony Orchestra, String Serenaders, College Choir and Choral for the Spring Concert on Thursday 7th March. This concert is one of the absolute highlights of the Music Department’s calendar and this year was no exception.
The concert opened with the Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, by Mascagni, played beautifully by String Serenaders. We then enjoyed three spellbinding performances given by four of our SFC2 Music Scholars. We were treated to the delights of the 2nd movement of Mozart’s Flute and Harp Concerto, performed by Amelia and Natalie. This is a piece that has become one of the most popular concertos in recent years and is simply delightful. The fireworks of Sarasate’s Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Dances) followed and was a treat for both the orchestra to play and the audience to witness, played superbly by Guinevere. The first half finished with the ‘Hollywood-esque’ sounds of Scriabin’s Piano Concerto: the only concerto written, but accounts for some of the most beautiful and sublime melodies written. Sandy played superbly bringing the first half to a triumphant close.
The second half was filled by the Classical delight that is the Nelson Mass, written by Haydn in 1798. The Choral Society has worked so hard on preparing this piece for the Spring Concert, come rain and shine over the last few months, and the final performance gave justice to the hard work of this lovely group of singers.
This is of course a bitter-sweet evening as it is the last concert that our SFC musicians give at College. I must say how pleased and proud I am of the commitment and hard-work of these fantastic musicians over many years – an absolute triumph!
