The Princess Hall came alive to the most magnificent sounds of Symphony Orchestra and our very own Choral Society for the Spring Concert. This concert is always a highlight of the year, as for many students, it is their last big performance as members of Symphony Orchestra and Choral.
The programme started with a sizzling performance of Verdi’s Overture – The Force of Destiny. The orchestra was electric, with the ferocious string writing falling effortlessly in to place, combined with the soft melody lines of the solo clarinet.
This was followed by two concerto performances given by two of our SFC2 Music Scholars: Zadie, performing Hunter’s Moon by Vinter, followed by Sophie performing the first movement of Kabalevsky’s Violin Concerto. Both girl’s played with all their heart and soul to create memorable performances of which they can be very proud.
The first half finished with the first movement of Beethoven’s 7th Symphony. This challenging piece was played with such energy and vigour – I take my hat off to the hard work, practice and dedication that every member of Symphony Orchestra has put in to ensure the evening was enjoyed by all.
The first half made way for Choral Society to entertain us in the second half with a spell-binding performance of Carl Orff’s – Carmina Burana, conducted by Dominic Hawley (my esteemed predecessor as Director of Music of 19 years). This was something of a 25th Anniversary performance for him, as this was the very first piece he conducted upon his arrival at College in 2000. He was joined by two members of our Vocal Faculty: Elinor Moran (solo soprano) and Sam Harrison-Oram (solo Baritone) who gave stunning performances to bring this wonderful piece to life. Lower College Choir also joined the adults of Choral and College Choir in this memorable performance – they can all be very proud of their performance.
The whole evening was terrific and a real tour de force for all involved. My thanks to everyone involved.
Mr Lloyd, Director of Music
