St. Hilda’s East Community Centre, based in Shoreditch in London, was founded by alumnae of CLC towards the end of the 19th Century, with the aim of combatting the terrible urban poverty that was a by-product of the early Industrial Revolution. The founders would not recognise the area around the settlement today, nor many of the activities that form the basis of community support there, but its aims would be recognisable to them: to combat deprivation and social exclusion through providing education and recreational provision along with social care — activities that enable and empower individuals.
In 2024 St. Hilda’s East will celebrate its 135th anniversary and College is planning a joint fundraising dinner in October in London, to support the ongoing projects of the Centre, which include youth programmes, care and support for over 50s, a food co-op, women’s groups, and a legal advice centre. If you are interested in either being part of the organising committee, or if you have any suggestions for, or contacts, with a venue which could hold a dinner for between 350-500 guests, please contact Rebecca Ting, CLC Director of Development & Alumnae Relations tingr@cheltladiescollege.org
