Kalina (SFC1) has been announced as one of the winners of this year’s Sheffield Translation Prize. She had to translate into English an excerpt from a French memoir-cum-literary study, Proust, roman familial. As well as an Amazon voucher, she won an invitation to an online translation workshop organised by the university where she learned about different approaches to translation, which depend on the nature of the original text. She also learned that a good translation should be like a ninja - only noticed when it is not doing its job properly!
Victory in Joutes Oratoires - French debating competition
This year we had two teams competing in the regional heat of the Institut Français’ National Debating Competition which took place at Marlborough College. Our SFC2 team of Zoë and Gia retained the trophy they won last year and thus are through to the national final to be held in at the Institut Français in London in mid-March. Our SFC1 team of Ashley and Chandrika were also highly impressive, winning two of their three debates and missing out on a place in the final by just one point! Subjects up for debate included Napoleon’s reputation today, the dangers of Artificial Intelligence and the issue of surveillance cameras in schools.
