UC4 History Trip To Berlin
11th July 2024

Over the May bank holiday, 43 UC4 History students travelled to Berlin to support their study of Nazi Germany and the Cold War. We were incredibly lucky with the weather and enjoyed four days of glorious sunshine to accompany our exploits around the city.

Our first day was packed full of significant historical sites including the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, the Cecilienhof Palace where the Potsdam Conference was held, and an incredibly poignant visit to Sachsenhausen concentration camp. This was an important experience for the students and everyone gained a deeper understanding of the widespread impact of totalitarian regimes.

Sunday consisted of a walking tour of the city, discussing the impacts the division had on its inhabitants. The afternoon was spent in the DDR and Otto Weidt museums which were a real highlight for the students, as they were able to look in-depth at the lived experiences of disabled workers under the Nazis and life in East Germany under Soviet control.

Just before we flew back on Monday, we visited the Asisi Panorama exhibition of ‘The Wall’ – an impressive piece of hyper-realistic art depicting life in West Germany behind the Berlin Wall.

It was a fantastic weekend jam-packed full of history and the students (and staff!) had a brilliant time. We are very much looking forward to taking UC4 students again next year!
