On Friday 17th November, the Maths Department had the pleasure of coordinating a Maths in Action trip. We took more than 40 UC4 students to the University of Birmingham for a series of workshops.
The goal of the trip was to help students deepen their understanding of key mathematical concepts, improve their problem-solving skills and most importantly, generate excitement for all things maths! The captivating speakers led the students through a range of compelling and interactive activities, crafted to enrich their learning experience.
The students had the opportunity to explore the world of patterns and puzzles, listen to a discussion led by Colin Wright and observe unexpected patterns in juggling. The mathematical artist Ayliean MacDonald, showcased the versatility of a chessboard revealing its applications beyond chess. She presented a mix of solved and unsolved problems, fostering curiosity and capturing the interest of the audience.
Sophie Maclean demonstrated the connection between music and mathematics, emphasising that both disciplines possess individual beauty. When combined, they create something magical. Students were given the opportunity to showcase their best singing voices in this harmonious exploration of the interplay between maths and music.
The group had an amazing trip where they not only enjoyed themselves but also expanded their understanding of mathematics. The sessions were intriguing, and they were pleasantly surprised by the practical applications of arithmetic that they encountered. This experience likely deepened their appreciation for the subject, making learning more engaging and memorable.
