PGC: University of Chicago Talk
6th December 2023

On Thursday 16th November, we were delighted to welcome Katie Chaszcewski from the University of Chicago for an online talk on US College applications to students from UC4 to SFC2.

Deborah, one of our SFC2 students applying to the US, has shared her reflections on the talk:

Earlier this month, students had the opportunity to hear from Katie Chaszcewski, Deputy Dean of Admissions and Director of Outreach and Communications at the University of Chicago. The session began with an introduction of the institution’s core values followed by a Q&A session allowing students to receive invaluable advice on the admissions process for students applying from the UK.

As Ms Chaszcewski emphasized, UChicago has a strong dedication to supporting individuals’ freedom of speech and inquiry, and students showcase intellectual curiosity and the willingness to ask questions that push the boundaries of conventional education.

Ms Chaszcewski also highlighted the Core curriculum under UChicago’s liberal arts education, which is set with intentions of sparking the more curious side of students. Attempting to tailor to the diverse and passionate interests of its students, there are over 50 majors available alongside elective courses. This structure enables pupils to approach academia through different perspectives and be guided into the area they are most keen on learning about even if students apply undecided. Furthermore, there are a wide realm of opportunities for you to learn outside of the classroom; for example, around 90% of students participate in research, aiding them in discovering their professional aspirations.

Outside of the academic sphere, UChicago takes a holistic approach, valuing students as people outside of their academic achievements. With a robust school life and house system under the 45 different houses (quite like the boarding houses at CLC), you can form tight-knit communities and join a myriad of societies. The over 140 clubs and societies range from improv comedy groups to zombie readiness club!

Ultimately, through this webinar, Ms Chaszcewski helped to capture the essence of this forward-thinking and prestigious university that fosters the development of the whole student.

On behalf of the those who attended the talk, I would like to extend my thanks to Katie for giving up her time and inspiring our students with their applications to the US.
