After last year’s virtual fashion show, it was wonderful to be able to hold a live event back in the Princess Hall on Tuesday 29th March. A record number of pupils participated and we saw nearly 50 outfits modelled by girls from LC1 to SFC1 (Year 7 to 13).
The competition showcases the incredible ingenuity and creative vision of the students: the outcomes reflect many hours of hard work, careful planning and persistent problem-solving – and perhaps a few happy accidents! The students all made imaginative and inspired use of unwanted items to create some stunning garments.
This year, they repurposed plastic bags and bottles, poly pockets and lateral flow test kits (to name but a few); created elegant showstoppers from newspaper and packaging materials; turned tired bedsheets, duvets and pillowcases into beautiful skirts, waistcoats and pyjamas, and produced stunning accessories in the form of headpieces, bags, fans and even umbrellas.
LC3 (Year 9) Textiles students also showcased their recent classwork, presenting 20 upcycled men’s work shirts which they had skilfully transformed into a collection of very stylish and wildly different garments including stunning sundresses and cleverly tailored tops. The atmosphere was amazing: the large and supportive audience clapped and cheered throughout, with the House Trashion entries, unsurprisingly, receiving the loudest screams!
The models presented the garments with real confidence and flair, as a result of attending a Runway Workshop with professional dancer and voguer Patrick Ziza. The workshop was tremendous fun, with Patrick teaching the students how to walk and pose, and show off the garments to the audience. There is no doubt that they felt a little more ‘fabulous’ as a result! The winners of the Trashion category were SFC1 (Year 12) students Hannah, Tasha and Fiorella, who used their engineering skills to produce a stunning corset and newspaper fan skirt.
The Upcycling category was won by Tara (SFC1), who turned an old floral bedsheet into a lovely summery halter top and circular skirt. Pupils from Glengar were this year’s winners of the House Trashion category: they produced a gloriously colourful outfit, topped with umbrella that was, quite literally, raining trash! Huge congratulations to everyone who participated in this year’s competition – I can’t wait to see what comes down the runway next year!
