It’s that time of year again when the whole of CLC gets even more excited about books than usual.
There’s much discussion among secondary school librarians about how to make the most of World Book Day. Many believe it should be celebrated with serious activities that have a tangible, long-term impact on reading skills and reading habits.
At CLC, we are lucky to have a packed programme of serious reading promotion all year round. So, when it comes to challenging, mind-improving titles, for us, it’s World Book Day every day. For example, the ‘Battle of the Books’ is raging as we speak and has been all term. The quarter-finals took place last week, with the semi-finals and final scheduled for next week.
Therefore, we have nothing for which to reproach ourselves, when on World Book Day itself, we let our hair down, tie it in pigtails, dye it blue or hide it under a mad hat. On World Book Day, we just have fun and pay homage to our favourite book characters, whether they are from early bedtime stories or from more recent favourites.
Thus, the Marble Corridor and Main Library briefly turn into the Fancy Dress Catwalk, where fairy tale characters, Hogwarts students, and any number of superheroes strut their stuff together. We also finally find out where exactly Wally is – at least during that half hour.

This year, the dressing-up theme was ‘Book characters from your own culture’, which meant that many of us got to meet some literary figures who were less familiar to us – a sure way to discover some firm new favourites in the books from which these characters sprang. Alas, we must keep their identities hidden for now, because the ‘Guess Who?’ competition is still in full swing.
What I can say, is that with all the music, dancing, laughter, and general mayhem, the love of books shared by our students and staff was abundantly clear in what was a truly life-affirming, unabashedly joyful celebration.

We were also delighted to welcome Schnokie to College for World Book Day!
Schnokie is SFC Delphine’s rescue lamb, who helped provide lots of happy faces in the College gardens.
